Our family moved to Toronto from the mining community of Levack Ontario in 1967. I had the opportunity to return to my home town in 1979, when I spent the summer interviewing the founding fathers and mothers of the town. With my findings I wrote the history of Levack. I returned again in 2009 as was thrilled to have been referred to as the town historian in the event publication.
After graduating from Riverdale Collegiate Institute in 1973, I earned a Specialist's Degree in English Literature from Victoria College (University of Toronto) in 1978. My main focus was Literature of the English Renaissance and Modern Literary Theory. I was most fortunate to have been at Vic while Northrop Frye was still there. Even now my reading is influenced by Professor Frye's teaching.
The following year I became a Member of the Toronto Real Estate Board and began selling homes with my father, Laddie Kavluk, a veteran salesman in the industry at that time. As a teenager I delivered flyers for my father to virtually every door in the east end of the city.
In 1981 I qualified for my Broker's Designation and became the Principal Broker and Owner of Oxford Real Estate Ltd., a position which I held for 24 years.
As an Instructor for the Ontario Real Estate Association I have taught the Phase 1,2 and 3 Introductory Real Estate Courses as well as Principles of Mortgage Financing at Ryerson, Humber College, and the Ontario Real Estate Association.
In 1994 I attained my Appraisal Designation (MVA) from the Ontario Real Estate Association, later sitting on OREA's review panel for new applicants.
In addition to having sold or acted as broker in perhaps more than 2000 transactions, I appraise residential properties for Estate Probate, Tax purposes, and Partnership Buyouts. This experience has proven to be an important and valuable asset when listing and selling of homes.
I had the privilege of serving as an elected Director of the Toronto Real Estate Board for five terms, during which time I chaired several key committees:MLS, Education, Ethics Appeals, and By-Laws.
In the Spring of 2005 I joined the team at Bosley Real Estate Ltd.- a world class company, independantly owned and which has recently celebrated its 82nd anniversary in the real estate industry.
My wife Debra and I live in Toronto's Riverdale neighbourhood. Our home is a charming Victorian purchased in 1979. We're the third owners of this 120+ year old home.
